The Peninsula’s working town

Monterey is the largest and most various town on the Peninsula — the one with a downtown, a working harbour and a job base rather than a village high street. It was California’s first capital, and the Path of History walking route still threads past adobes from the Spanish and Mexican periods, several of them a block or two from the modern business district.

That range shows in the housing. Monterey covers restored adobes and Victorians in Old Town, dense early twentieth-century blocks in New Monterey behind Cannery Row, mid-century subdivisions on the slopes, and larger contemporary houses in the wooded neighbourhoods climbing toward the ridge. It is the one Peninsula market where the stock genuinely spans the range.

Neighbourhood matters more than the town name

Monterey’s neighbourhoods behave almost independently of one another. Old Town and New Monterey trade on walkability to the waterfront, and carry the density and parking constraints that come with it. The slope neighbourhoods above trade that walkability for views, quiet and — often — sun above the fog line. Because much of the stock predates modern codes, and because hillside lots bring drainage and access questions, the condition spread between two similar-looking listings can be very wide.

Living in Monterey

The Recreation Trail runs the length of the waterfront from the harbour through Cannery Row and on into Pacific Grove, and the aquarium and wharf sit at either end of it. Carmel-by-the-Sea is a short drive south over the hill, and Carmel Valley inland from there.
